Location & Background Alerts

Location is central to how ClearDepth keeps you safe on the water, so we want to be specific about how it is used.

While you are using the app, your location is used to centre the map on you, to let you tag a hazard at your current position, and to warn you when you come close to a hazard someone has flagged.

Background location — only if you enable it ClearDepth can warn you as you approach a dangerous submerged hazard even while the app is closed or your phone is locked. To do that, the app monitors your location in the background. This is off by default. It is only ever turned on after we explain it and you explicitly tap to allow it, and you can turn it off at any time.

How background location is used: your device checks whether you have entered a zone around a nearby flagged hazard and, if so, shows you a notification. This happens on your device.

What we do not do with it: we do not continuously record or store a history of where you have been, we do not build a movement profile, we do not use your location for advertising, and we do not sell or share your location with third parties or data brokers.

Turning it off: open Profile → Notifications in ClearDepth and switch off Background Hazard Alerts. You can also revoke location permission entirely in your device settings (iOS: Settings → ClearDepth → Location; Android: Settings → Apps → ClearDepth → Permissions → Location). The rest of the app continues to work without it.

How We Use Your Data

We do not use your data for advertising or share it with advertisers.

Third-Party Services

Supabase — Database, authentication, and file storage
supabase.com/privacy
Sentry — Crash and error reporting
sentry.io/privacy
USGS National Water Information System — Public water level data. No user data is sent to USGS.
usgs.gov/privacy-policy

Water level data is also retrieved from other public government and utility sources, including the National Weather Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Bureau of Reclamation. No user data is sent to any of them.

Data Retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. Hazard reports and chat messages you submit are stored and visible to other users of the same lake community.

If you delete your account, your profile data is removed. Some community contributions (hazard reports) may remain to preserve safety information for other users.
